Lesson 1: Discussion

This is your chance to reflect on how what you’ve learned about knowing, using, and shaping the law might be useful in addressing injustices in your community. Consider the injustice you highlighted at the beginning of the course. In the comments below, let us know how legal empowerment might offer a different response to the injustice. Is there an opportunity to combine the power of people with the power of law to address the problems you are facing? Do you see any parallels from the historical examples that were shared?

There is a lot of discrepancy in the number of trees planted between the neighborhood where I live and the more wealthy one next to me. This makes it much hotter in the summer in my neighborhood because there’s less shade and the pavement absorbs and retains more heat. This can have significant health implications between the neighborhoods. If my community better understood the rules about who decided where trees are planted and how that money is shared between neighborhoods we would know where to start. I think there are a lot of people in my neighborhood who could be organized to show up at the right meetings.
