Justice Defenders (formerly known as African Prisons Project) is a Non-governmental Organization working in Kenyan Prisons, offering legal services and training to both inmates and prison officers as paralegals and lawyers, who in turn offer legal aid services to inmates in our walk-in legal aid clinics.

Alex Omanga Motari was one of our trained paralegals at Kiambu Prison who was very remarkable since he joined the program in September 2019. The topics covered during the training included General Principles of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedures, Evidence Law, Civil and Children matters, Constitutional Law and Human Rights, Appeals, Court Structures and their Jurisdiction, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Communication Skills, Court Etiquette, Professional Ethics. Monitoring and Evaluation, Office Practice and Management.

My role in Justice Defenders legal aid clinic was assisting in co-ordination of legal awareness sessions, interviewing clients, recording clients’ data, assist clients in preparation for cross examinations and making follow up on client’s case progress and recording outcomes. In return Alex earned respect and admiration from his fellow Inmates and staff members.
