I am an activist and a human rights lawyer with a JD the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and a Masters in Law degree in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford, UK.For the last 8 years I have worked on several access to justice initiatives, which include strategic litigation at local and international levels, popular education, and organizing movements lawyers. I am writing as the founder and Executive Director of Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico. We are a non-profit organization that provides free and accessible legal education and support to low income individuals and communities. We accompany organizations, groups and communities in the defense of their human rights, particularly dignified housing and just recovery. We believe that there is power in knowing your rights and that social impact advocacy is a tool to promote social change. This vision is the driving force behind our work. I wrote to Namati because we have been using legal workers and community paralegals (using other names, without a structure) in several efforts of legal empowerment years and decades before this organization. They are present on our environmental justice work and in the fight against police brutality. We have developed capacity among them through housing justice efforts. Yet, we lack a structure to truly have a paralegal effort that is coherent with our legal empowerment work and that truly carries out the power to transform. The vision is to inaugurate a Community Paralegal Project amplifying current efforts of legal education and capacity development. We are looking for people who have done this with success, solidarity and love.
