Jonathan Ochom

LANDnet Uganda (Unverified)
Joined December 2017
Interests: Community / Customary Land Rights, Environmental Justice
Jonathan Ochom is a human rights lawyer and activist with core areas of expertise in land, access to justice and legal innovations. Although land is not Jonathan's only passion, it certainly is the one that drives his career the most. For close to a decade, he has been behind some of the leading interventions that have shaped the land sector in Uganda through community mobilisation and empowerment, legal aid, research as well as legal and policy reform. Jonathan is currently leading advocacy efforts for the establishment of a customary land registry in Uganda. Previously, he championed the publication of an inaugural assessment of Uganda’s performance on land-related Sustainable Development Goals. He has also conducted several trainings and researches for different land actors in the country on diverse land-related topics. At the early stages of his career, Jonathan mobilised some of the pastoral communities to constitute Communal Land Associations so as to protect their land.

Jonathan appreciates the centrality of land in human development and sees his role as a catalyst in making that a reality. This has seen him hold portfolios at LANDnet Uganda, Oxfam International, the Democratic Governance Facility and Uganda Land Alliance where he has worked multiple stakeholders from the grassroots to the global arena. He holds an LLM (Human Rights Law) from Swansea University, UK; post-graduate qualifications in Project Management and Legal Practice; and a Bachelor of Laws.
