Jhody is the Founder/Director of the Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Hub (LEAH)and Director of Community Justice at the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding. LEAH is the home of the National Jailhouse Lawyers Initiative and is the first Participatory Defense Hub in the state of Florida. LEAH is a grassroots non profit organization dedicated to SDG 16 and growing Legal Empowerment in the United States, especially in isolated, vulnerable and incarcerated communities. Jhody is a 2018 Soros Justice Fellow and formerly incarcerated Jailhouse Lawyer. Jhody worked as a central Florida organizer on Amendment 4, restoring voting rights to over 1.4 million Floridians with Felony Convictions. In 2019 she received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award and the Peacebuilder of the Year award. She is also the founder of the Florida Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls.
Jhody aspires to become a certified license human rights attorney and teacher of the law. She also intends to run for and hold public office. Through the Namati network she hopes to gain the knowledge, relationships and resources expand access to justice for All in her community, state, country and around the world. She hopes to remove the barriers between people and the law and create opportunities for the incarcerated to learn the law during incarceration and achieve their law degrees while incarcerated, she also hopes grow community paralegals in the communities she serve. Jhody is proud Mother, community peacebuilder, defender of Justice and Black Woman.
