Interests: Gender-based violence
My name is Barrister Ugwu Somtochukwu I am a lawyer by profession. I am currently serving as the Gender Head/ Partnerships Officer of Society for the Improvement of Rural People (SIRP). SIRP is an NGO based in Nigeria, which is committed to addressing the various challenges facing various vulnerable groups in Nigeria. I am also the team leader of Unskilled to Skilled (U2S), which is a Youth Economic Empowerment (YEE) platform that is committed to reducing the youth unemployment rate here in Nigeria, which currently stands at 23.1%.
I have gotten and won so many recognitions and awards for my work. Notable amongst them is the Unleash Talent Award 2019 and also being recognized as a global ambassador by RockFlower (US). I am passionate about promoting youth and women empowerment issues.
My responsibilities at SIRP are quite enormous. It includes but are not limited to the following:
• To ensure gender mainstreaming in all our activities
• To design and manage all gender related projects
• To train and monitor paralegals
• To offer legal aid services
• To draft out proposals, reports etc
• To cultivate and maintain good and friendly relationships between SIRP and partners.
This network will play a very big role in not just helping us to improve on our leaderships skills in the area of legal empowerment. But it will also serves as a platform, where I get to also connect with other individuals and organizations working in the area of legal empowerment. I strongly believe in building strong partnerships and coalitions. A popular adage says “If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together”. This is the power inherent in building strong partnerships.
