Am Grace Gitu passionate about empowering agricultural and livelihood skills to poor rural women farmers, girls and youth to reduce rural poverty in Kenya. I hold Msc. Agricultural Extension and Bsc. Agricultural Education. I have over 20 years working experience in the rural agriculture under the public and private sector. During my working experience, l encountered the challenges faced by women due cultural discriminations, lack of income, overburdening house chores and limitation to education. Many rural development programs by governments and others never addressed the key issues to unblock the challenges faced by this group, leading to persistent poverty and gender discriminations found in Africa. To attempt addressing the mentioned challenges, my colleagues and l started a volunteer group to assist very needy cases as we encountered during our official duties. Due to change of jobs, exits and others, the volunteer group was not sustainable. In 2014, the few remaining registered in Kenya, a non profit organization known as Àfrica Farmer Need at Farm Level Initiative(AFNEED). The organization objectives was to continue with the volunteer work we started with my colleagues, expand our activities to the whole country, seek for support from well wishers to enhance our empowerment program. AFNEED has been able to achieve lengths especially on having girls in school and women food production. The COVID-19 outbreak disrupted our practices and resources. We are attempting come back within COVID-19 but with lots of challenges due to restricted gatherings, social distancing, curfew, low rural digitalization skills and lack of resources. AFNEED is governed by a 5 board of directors, 3 being executive and l am the Executive Director Technical Affairs and resource mobilizing. By joining this network, am looking for learning operation experiences from similar non profit organizations, fund raising skills, partnerships, COVID-19 response and mitigation, and any other good practices.
Grace Gitu is the network champion (main point of contact) for Africa Farmer Need at Farm Level Initiative(AFNEED).
