Avocats sans frontières Canada (Lawyers without borders – ASFC), created by Canadian lawyers in 2002, aims at empowering local associations and advocates with the goal of advancing Justice and Human Rights for all, especially persons in situation of vulnerability.
ASFC has developed a unique expertise in Canada. It manages large scale international cooperation projects which combine actions of legal aid, judicial assistance, strategic litigation of emblematic cases of human rights violations, advocacy for change, training and the reinforcement of local capacities. These projects are often carried out over a number of years in complex environments (conflict, post-conflict, post natural disaster, etc.)
ASFC’s results-based management system allows for a strict management of the funds it receives and ensures the longevity of its projects and actions.
We favour collaboration between lawyers from here and lawyers or organizations from abroad, who work alongside victims of serious human rights violations: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, serious or systematic human rights violations, exclusion and discrimination.
We intervene in response to the needs expressed by local actors in order to ensure the respect of fundamental rights and to end acts of aggression committed against populations in situations of vulnerability. We assert victims’ rights before national and international jurisdictions, always with the primary objective that justice be done by and for local stakeholders.
