Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA)

Dhaka, Bangladesh
Joined March 2015
Presence in: Bangladesh
Focus: Environmental Justice, Right to Information

BELA was established in 1992 with a group of lawyers with the broad objective of promoting environmental justice and contributing to the development of sound environmental jurisprudence. BELA started its mission as an advocacy group of young lawyers developing legal techniques and strategies to protect the environment and defend rights of communities dependent on nature and natural resources. Founded by Dr. Mohiuddin Farooque, the organization has paved the way for environmental legal activism in the country and has been the pioneer of public interest litigation in Bangladesh. BELA has adopted various means to create awareness amongst the major actors and the common people about their environmental rights and duties. BELA has published books and other awareness materials, all having relevance to the concept of environmental protection and justice. It is also active in promoting people’s right to information and the concept of participatory law-making in the country.

I have been served to BELA(Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association) since 2014 as a Lawyer. It is a matter of pride to me that I work for this organization which aims at promoting a sustainable and sound environment through legal activism in the country. I have also experiences of working with reputed civil and corporate law firms as an Advocate and Associate where I worked with satisfaction and diverse mode of law practices.

I have completed my higher secondary school (H.S.C) in 2006 with outstanding results. Then, I completed LL.B.(Hon's) from University of London, UK with great achievements and accomplished my LL.M. course from Eastern University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Subsequently, I started my law career as a Legal Associate in 'Barrister Zafarullah Chowdhury and Associates'.

BELA's activities are quite different and unique in respect of other law firms. BELA works with a specific objective of ensuring better protection of environment and a sound environmental jurisprudence of the country. Not only by means of filing suits against the environment polluters, but also advocating the communities through workshop and other programmes, arranging awareness programmes for the judiciary, police, journalists and other actors and providing legal assistance to the poor and deprived people are also part of BELA's activities.

I hope this Learning Exchange Progamme organized by Namati and Alternative Law Groups will be a footstep of knowledge for us and we will contribute further to BELA by participating in the Learning Programme.

Thank You.
