Presence in: South Africa
Focus: Citizenship, Gender-based violence, Generalist Legal Services

We build journalism capacity for paralegals to develop stories on social justice issues in under-reported areas. We provide technology, editorial guidance and connect them with local community radio stations so they can broadcast their stories in African languages.
We then bridge this rural journalism with the mainstream media and bring these untold stories to a wider public through podcasts, national radio stations and websites.

I run an NPO in South Africa that trains community paralegals in rural areas to be radio journalists, connects them with their local radio stations and guides them to put their work on the radio. I am looking to expand this model of working with people already trusted by their communities to include healthcare workers and agricultural workers. We also have an ambition to make the reporting processes and final broadcasts digital so the information can be searchable and have a wider reach. We also want to help protect the community media sector in general from intimidation by the government.
Paul McNally is the network champion (main point of contact) for Citizen Justice Network.
