Conscience International Sierra Leone (CISL) is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit human rights organisation working in Sierra Leone with sister branches in The Gambia and Liberia.

Presence in: Sierra Leone
Focus: Citizenship & Identification, Environmental Justice, Livelihoods

CISL takes a human rights based approach to address development issues affecting West African countries, as well as the wider world. We believe that all individuals have the right to live with dignity through attainment of basic needs and encompass the ability to exercise political, cultural and social freedoms. We don’t provide aid; we create change at grassroots level, empowering communities to stand up for their rights.

In Sierra Leone, we work with marginalised communities at a local and national level through both programme implementation and advocacy efforts, supporting the mandate that, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

Conscience International was founded in The Gambia by a group of motivated visionaries focused on the Darfur conflict in Sudan.  In time, we felt the importance of highlighting issues closer to home to have the most impact.  CI was then expanded in West Africa and arrived in Sierra Leone in 2008. Our organisation is made up of colleagues from a diversity of African and European countries and we welcome a regular intake of international volunteers.
