 Deeds is a registered Society, registered in the year 1982, in Mangalore, Karnataka. Ever since then, it is involved in working with the various vulnerable section of the society with the Vision of an Inclusive, Just, Humane, and Participatory Society.

The mission of DEEDS is to promote gender equality for marginalized communities for human development through legal education, research, training, and networking with communities, civil societies, and state institutions.

Deeds has promoted several community-based groups networked with duty bearers, NGOs, and professionals for human development. For the last two decades DEEDS works with men and women to bring gender equality and build a humane society in the State of Karnataka.

For the last 12 years DEEDS is involved in developing paralegal facilitators in 8 districts of Karnataka. More than 300 paralegal facilitators are working closely with the District Legal Service Authorities to make it more effective and functional in providing justice to the needy. It has formed a district and State level network of Paralegal facilitators collective for strengthening legal services for victims of abuse and violence. DEEDS runs a resource center to provide material support for legal education and actively provides legal aid through the center established by it. Every year it supports about 100 cases of women victims of violence directly and provides legal education to more than 10000persons.

Merlyn Martis, a Social activist, and a lawyer committed to the cause of using the law to reduce violence against women. Equipped with education a postgraduate in Social work from Nirmala Niketan, School of Social Work, Mumbai, a registered lawyer from SDM, Law College Mangalore, and a Counselling training from St Agnes College Mangalore. I am associated with DEEDS an NGO for the last 39 years. After about 5 years of law practice, I started working with women's groups on a number of issues relating to violence, inequality, dowry, etc. Presently I work as the director of DEEDS and work on women's rights, gender justice, and law. We have set up a resource center for organizations and individuals working on gender issues. I am a resource person in gender and laws for women and have facilitated a number of capacitating programs for NGOs, Government personnel, and institutions. I have translated laws for women in Kannada and prepared different IEC materials for easy use for grassroots awareness. I am implementing a project in Karnataka State to develop Paralegal facilitators to work on reducing violence against women. As a member of the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace ) Committee, I offer my expertise in law to universities, Public sector companies, and institutions. Through the center run by us, we provide legal aid to the survivors of violence. By Joining your network, I hope to widen my horizon of learning from people using the law for social justice. It will also provide visibility to the work we do. and necessary support to the people we work with.
