Friends of Lake Turkana is a civil society organization founded almost ten years ago to work with communities in the Lake Turkana basin enivromental issues, community rights, conservation and governance. Our mission is to To foster social, economic and environmental justice in the Turkana Basin through promotion of sustainable management of resources and protection of the natural environment with stakeholder participation. We are located along Lodwar-Kalokol Road, Turkana County Kenya. With the dawn of oil discovery in 2012, there was need to integrate protection of community rights of the host communities into our activities and research. Key milestones include lodging a case in the Kenyan High Court in 2012 to challenge the decision of the Kenyan government to allow and be party to the construction of Gibe III Dam across River Omo in Ethiopia, an endevour which was detrimental to the water level, marine life and biodiversity of the lake. The case was ruled in our favour but the government has since not implemented the recommendations of the Court( The case is available online: Friends of Lake Turkana Case). Secondly, we formed part of the team that strongly opposed the idea of establishing a community conservancy in Turkana South sub counties because it did not follow the principles and values of the law and the constitution of Kenya on participation, transparency, the respect for customs and tradition of the Turkana people. Thirdly, we have a strong network of Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) who continue to hold duty beaers to account on matters revenue allocation, project implementation, community participation of oil and gas business, just but a few. We are currently in partnering with an organisation called Natural Justice on how to empower communities to use the law in holding the government and investors to account in respect to climate change in Turkana County as a result of industrial and infrastructure projects, among other activities.
