Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a model for Palliative Care (PC) in Sub-Saharan Africa. HAU started in 1993 with the aim of supporting affordable, suitable and accessible PC for all in need in Uganda and other African countries. Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the struggles associated with life-threatening illnesses by holistically addressing their physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs.

HAU has 3 objectives which include:

  1. To provide an appropriate palliative care service to patients, with HIV/AIDS and/or cancer, and their families within defined operational areas.
  2. To provide Palliative Care education through a tertiary level institution to professionals in Uganda and other African countries, through advocacy, education and stakeholder training.
  3. To facilitate the initiation and expansion of palliative care services in other African countries.

HAU’s approach includes direct PC service delivery, training and supporting partner organizations to integrate PC into their services and advocacy. HAU therefore promotes this model through providing an appropriate palliative care service to patients, with HIV/AIDS and/or cancer, and their families within defined operational areas. Applying these strategies, Hospice Africa Uganda has grown in the last 25 years, offering palliative care to over 30,000 patients, trained about 10,053 health and non-health professionals in Uganda and 31 other African countries.
