IFI Watch Myanmar is an organization that seeks to ensure democratic space for civil society and communities in the activities of International Financial Institutions [IFIs] in Myanmar. We seek to achieve this through facilitating dialogue between government, IFIs and local communities.

.

Vision:

A democratic governance of IFI operations in Myanmar; in order to realize inclusive development, economic justice and ecological sustainability and to ensure the meaningful involvement of the communities  including decision making.

Objectives:

  • People have effective access to information about IFI activities so that they can have an informed engagement
  • Non-state actors and communities engage meaningfully with the IFIs and the government in shaping the design, decisions and outcomes of development programs that reflect their needs
  • WB, ADB, AIIB and IFC are following their respective safeguard policies effectively.

Our Strategies:

  • Awareness raising
    • We provide communities with information on upcoming projects
  • Community-based monitoring of joint government and IFI supported projects
    • We train communities affected by IFI-supported projects in monitoring compliance or non-compliance with existing IFI safeguards
    • We facilitate community engagement with government and international actors, striving to ensure that local voices are heard in decision-making and implementation processes
  • Research and documentation
    • We collect and publish data on IFI projects, policies and strategies.
