Presence in: Netherlands
Focus: Criminal Justice

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community. It is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal seated in The Hague, Netherlands. It is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national Courts. Governed by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court.

Interests: Criminal Justice
I am a New York bar-qualified attorney with over ten years’ professional legal experience in public interest law through multi-jurisdictional litigation practice at regional human rights courts and international tribunals as well as the provision of counsel at law firms, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations. I also have expertise in out-of-court legal advocacy and community engagement.

I am presently a senior legal assistant to the lead defence counsel in a major case at the ICC. My work is, and always has been, heavily human rights and litigation-based. In the course of my human rights work, I have represented clients in the United States, Europe, and Africa, including in front of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, and the East African Court of Justice. At the International Criminal Court and the UN International Residual Mechanism for the Criminal Tribunals, I focus on ensuring access to justice, due process, and equality of arms for persons brought before international criminal tribunals.

I hold a J.D. from a law school in the USA where I specialised in international and comparative law, a master’s degree in European law (including human rights) from Université Panthéon-Assas in France, and a master’s degree in advanced studies of public international law (with a specialisation in international criminal law) from Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands. I am a native English speakers and proficient in French, Spanish and Punjabi. I am a US citizen who has lived in The Hague for the past nine years and am now living in Spain.

I firmly believe in the power of organized legal movements to facilitate change and to advance social and racial justice, democratic governance, and individual human rights. I am looking to connect with like-minded persons and to use my professional skills and expertise on pro bono or volunteer projects.
