We are based in 2 centres in KZN – one urban Pietermaritzburg and the other rural Mthonjaneni and we focus on womens access to their family law rights. This puts our work very at the interface of customary and constitutional law – and we are struggling to help women negotiate this divide. We run a paralegal advice office in both centres and the paralgals in Mthonjanenei work closely with traditional leaders. We also do community legal literacy training – and have pioneered an approach which we call “tea sharing” – where we host discussion groups in homesteads. We feedback discussions from thses groups on a regular basis to traditional leaders and have found thatfacing them with womens experince and grappling with the issues involved is an important part in softening disciminatory attitudes
