I am a 33 year old female Ugandan Lawyer. I am one of the founding Partners of Blair & Company Advocates, a law firm based in Uganda and we have been in operation since 2018. My dream has always been to be able to use my legal knowledge and skills to help those who are less privilaged in the society. In my country Uganda, just like most African countries, there is a huge gap in the justice system, only the rich and those in urban places can afford legal representation, leaving the poor people in the rural areas not accessing justice due to the fact that they cannot afford lawyers like myself. And this is what drove me and my Partner decided to form a separate entity from the law firm. We started "Justice Hive" which is a non profit organization where i am a Director. We have three departments, one caters for civil and political rights, and this is meant to help to demystify complex legal principles into simple, easy to understand language for everyone from the grassroots and lowest level of the society to be able to understand their rights, know where to go when they are faced with legal problems, give them advice on alternative ways of dispute resolution and where necessary, offer them pro bono legal services in the event that the matter at hand ends up in a mainstream court of law. The second deals with environmental justice which is aimed at ensuring wildlife conservation and ensuring rehabilitation of wildlife offenders. The third department deals with economic rights and this targets to implement projects that address the economic injustice faced in East African region. It targets to address the injustice in taxation policies, economic policies and other policies that specifically affect the economic progress of the people across East Africa. I wish to join Legal empowerment network because I long to network with likeminded people and organizations. To achieve our objectives as Justice Hive, we must work in collaboration with others civil society organizations, learning and supporting each other for the greater good. We all must join our hands together to be able to bring about real, tangible change in our justice systems and in our quest to uphold the rule of law in our continent, Africa. I know that this is the best platform for Justice Hive to meet such great minds and it will be an absolute honor to be a part of this great organization.
