Justice Initiative Centre (JIC) is a non-profit making organization devoted to the cause of enhancing the pursuit for justice and the respect for fundamental Human Rights. It undertakes to provide pro bono legal services and assistance to victims of ineffective justice systems and human rights violations.

MISSION: To promote justice initiatives and the respect for human rights and democratic principles in Africa through education and skills training, strategic litigation, creative activism, advocacy programming, research and development. Advocates and encourages programs that complies with human rights norms.

VISION: To have a continent free from impunity, injustices, human rights violations and a democratic deficit. To build a society conscious of the respect for the rule of law, human rights and democratic values.

OPERATIONAL PROGRAMS: To achieve our mission, JIC’s work is organized in the following operational program areas or units;

  1. HUMAN RIGHTS: Mandated to carry out advocacy campaigns, sensitization on core human rights issues, monitoring, documenting and reporting on the applicability of human rights principles and standards.
  2. LEGAL ASSISTANCE: Provides pro bono legal services to victims of human rights violations, carry out trial observations and provide legal advice, consultation and legal aid clinics.
  3. GENDER AND SOCIAL SERVICES: Promote gender equality, women empowerment and women’s right. It advocates for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. This unit is designed to also promote social wellbeing, providing psychosocial support, counselling and cash assistance.
  4. DEMOCRACY AND PEACE BUILDING: Promote democratic principles such as accountability, transparency and the respect for the rule of law. It initiates peace campaigns through inclusive participation and diversity management. It works to promote effective peace processes and non-violence.
  5. RESEARCH UNIT: Mandated to enhance the research activities of JIC

Benjamin Mekinde Tonga is from Cameroon and a holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Law from the University of Buea, Cameroon. He is expecting a PhD in Public International Law from the same University. He equally holds a Masters of Laws (LL.M) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa, from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa and he is a 2021 Commonwealth Scholar studying for a Masters in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

Benjamin has a rich professional experience in human rights, conflict and peace-building and international development. He has horned experiences in human rights investigation, documentation and reporting techniques. Protection monitoring, design and development. He has experience in project conception, design and implementation. He has gained experience working in the Non-profit organisation and management section. He has held the position of Human Rights Officer with the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) a leading human rights NGO based in Cameroon where his task was to provide strategic direction and vision to CHRDA’s protection programming, and program quality during a period of expansion, ensuring compliance with CHRDA’s mainstreaming framework, international law and protection standards and national policies, overseeing the project implementation and budgeting of protection, monitoring and information dissemination, identifying opportunities, designing and developing concept notes and proposals for other protection programming as requested, providing input on proposals from other sectors to ensure that protection is mainstreamed across CHRDA’s programming and analysing and understanding conflict dynamics and providing advice on protection issues.

He subsequently worked as human rights advocacy and programs director with the same organisation where he was charged with monitoring, reporting and documenting human rights violations, organising training workshops for NGOs, community-based organisations and public officials, publishing articles on human rights, identifying opportunities, drafting concept notes and writing funding proposals, undertaking strategic human rights advocacy, including via online and offline means, and engaged in Human rights project conception, design and implementation.

He has worked as a professional legal assistant at the African Union Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa. Currently, he holds the position of Campaigns Officer: Freedom of Peaceful Assembly with World Alliance for Citizen Participation- CIVICUS.

He recently founded his organisation called Justice Initiative Centre (JIC), which is an organisation that creates hope in local communities through justice initiatives. His aim in joining this network is to explore the work opportunities here through grants and projects.
