Wakwetu youth group was formed in the year 2007 by young entrepreneurial minds that were venturing into vegetable and cereals business but could not raise enough starting capital and lacked collateral to access loans from banks. It is dually registered KAK/DSS/YG/577/2007.The group acted as a merry go round where members contributed funds to support each other’s business during stormy times. Over 500 people have been members and benefited from it. When the leadership of the group was passed to us, we decided to take a new direction of formalizing the operations of the group, i.e. opening a bank account rather than table banking, having a till number to collect funds from members for transparency purposes. We resolved to coming up with a mentorship/ training program where youths and women in Lurambi and Kakamega county at large will undertake trainings on agribusiness and entrepreneurship. The current group members are well trained and equipped to offer some mentorship to other youths, this will go a long way in addressing the unemployment rate in Kakamega and also curb the big menace which is “why startups fail after one year in operations in Kenya”.
