Presence in: Philippines
Focus: Education, Peace-building

The Madaris Volunteer Program (MVP) aims to improve the quality of education in the Bangsamoro areas of the Philippines by fostering a new environment of shared learning, respect, and cooperation between and among Islamic and Catholic schools. Madaris Volunteers serve the poorest communities of the ARMM, whose literacy rate consistently ranks as the lowest in the country. The schoolchildren whom the Madaris Volunteers serve have been victims of armed conflict and a decades-long historical disenfranchisement that still persists today. The program is an initiative of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), and is implemented by Ateneo de Davao University through its strategic partnerships with the Bureau of Madaris Education (BME), the National Association for Bangsamoro Education, Inc. (NABEI), and the Regional Government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The MVP provides volunteer teachers to privately managed Islamic schools, conducts various trainings for madaris teachers and administrators, and advocating peacebuilding through education and friendship.Volunteer Teacher DeploymentThe Madaris Volunteer Program is primarily a volunteer service program that deploys volunteers to teach DepEd-mandated subjects in selected pilot madaris in Bangsamoro communities for a ten-month, immersive volunteer experience. Volunteers stay with host families in the Bangsamoro, and teach school-aged children in madaris, engage in interreligious dialogue with Bangsamoro communities, and advocate peacebuilding through education and friendship. Organic teachers and administrators of the MVP’s partner madaris participate in capability enhancement trainings facilitated in partnership with CEAP-member schools. These trainings are designed to enhance the madaris’ teaching strategies, management skills, and other needs related to the K-to-12 program.
