I am a young woman from the Old town are within the Coast of Mombasa City, Kenya. Old town has alot of historical presence being home of Fort Jesus-A UNESCO world heritage site and many other historical sites and museums We have alot of tourists who come to Mombasa to learn more on our history, culture and the beautiful beaches and views I am passionate about gender equality, business empowernment for especially people living with disabilities, youth, women and single mothers, need and poor members of our community. Access to information is at such a low rate. We do not have free wifi in any public spaces. Most community members need to get source for their own paid internet service. Getting information across to our village areas from the main sources i.e Government agencies or private companies is poorly managed. There aren't any camps or programs at the grass roots level. Intermediaries such as our group and others are needed to facilitate this. Through such concerns we as a group want to see changes in our community and especially amidst Covid 19. Our Old Town residents were subjected to a lockdown and difficult circumstances were upon us. When the lock down was lifted, Some of us set and decided to form this group to be able to assist our community members. Mtondoni Investments Self Help Group was formed. I decided to be Secretary General due to my previous experience as Projects/Operations Coordinator. We gained our ceritification in September 2020. Currently we have one Economic empowernment project going on of a Mkokoteni(Cart) which we sell vegetables. We have a plan on starting another plan of a 3 wheeler(Tuk Tuk) for the group. Our future plan is to set up a business whereby we hire people with disability, single mothers, orphans, needy and poor community members to create products i.e apparel, accessories, shoes, clothes etc made from recycled and/or environmental friendly material. Once this workshop and business grows our final goal is of an E-Commerce platform based in Mombasa. Kenya more of like Amazon, Ali baba where sellers can use our platform to showcase recycled and environmentally friendly products to buyers from Kenya and all over. We will also assist in the delivery of the products. We also have a membership savings scheme to assist any member during any emergency. By joining this network. We are looking to gain more knowledge and know how for finally moving from a self help group to a community based organisation. We intend to get tools i.e trainings for the current members and office bearers, to get funding to bring our business proposals and projects to life. This network has assisted alot of organisations in Africa, they are genuine and people are aware of their proactive work in especially Kenya. It would extremely beneficial for us to be part of this network.
