North South Initiative (NSI) is a cross sector-based consortium situated in Malaysia to help bridge solidarity and equality gaps between the North and South in terms of human rights and social justice.

Our Goal:

  • To Analyze the Current Political Economy Model And Propose New Sustainable Systems Based On Solidarity, Social Justice and Sustainable Development Goals
  • To Ensure Marginalized Communities Have Direct Access To Development Planning And Policy Making Using Rights Based Approach
  • To Build Cross Sector and Interdisciplinary Collaborative Networks and Solidarity For Sustainable Social Justice

One of our thematic program is with migrant workers where we aim to empower migrant workers and other actors using the rights-based framework as a respond to the violation of their rights.

Some of the current tools and methods used by NSI to engage the Business sector includes helpline systems, smartphone applications, remediation’s, hostel inspections, social audits & dialogues, strategic litigation, workers empowerment, community organising, middle management training, data collection and evidence-driven digital systems.

We believe in the empowerment of the marginalized/disenfranchised and we do not intend to represent them nor be their voice as when given the correct tools, they can challenge oppressive structures themselves. Our model of social change is also inspired by South to South Solidarity (S2S) movement where people of developing nations come together in solidarity to decide the agenda and path of progress.

Adrian Pereira is the Executive Director and co-founder of North-South Initiative (NSI), a Human Rights and Social Justice orientated organisation based in Malaysia. NSI’s mission is to build a society which prioritises social justice via solidarity building. At NSI, the social mobilisers team works with marginalised communities from the ASEAN region and beyond to create a competent and resilient movement using critical pedagogy and design thinking. The communities they work with include migrant workers, refugees, domestic workers, victims of forced labour, small scale farmers, indigenous youths and people living in conflict zones like Patani and West Papua. This includes cleaning up the global supply chain from forced labour and ensuring Businesses and Governments are held accountable for human rights violations, including gender justice.

Before setting up NSI Adrian has worked with 2 UN-accredited international organisations, Pax Romana International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) and Dignity International. Having studied at Royal Military College in Malaysia, he had the experience of living in an environment which celebrates diversity and harmony beyond superficial and artificial levels. This has helped him with the framing of his world view.

Even though NSI is a small and significantly underfunded entity, we have developed competent migrant and refugee leaders who can document evidence of human rights and labour violations. We also have coached our interns and volunteers over the years who now contribute via various CSOs. To be sustainable, we have also established formal working relationships with multiple universities, INGOs and intergovernmental agencies to produce critical analysis and policy interventions despite having limited resources. To eliminate forced labour effectively, NSI and other like-minded NGOs must first be adequately resourced. To share solidarity, resources and donations with NSI, do reach us at, or
