The office of ombudsman is mandated to investigate acts of maladministration perpetrated by government officials.

Section 123 of the constitution provides that the Ombudsman is mandated to investigate any matters where it is alleged that a person has suffered injustice and it does not appear that there is any remedy reasonably available by way of proceedings in a court or by way of appeal from a court where there is no other practicable remedy. Section 5(1) of the Ombudsman Act law further states that the injustice should have been occasioned by an official of an organ of government. Further to that, Section 5(1) of the Ombudsman Act expounds that the Ombudsman may investigate any alleged instance or matter of   abuse of power or unfair treatment of any person by an official in the employ of any organ of Government, or manifest injustice or conduct by such official which would properly be regarded as oppressive or unfair in an open and democratic society
