PARCES is a non-profit community-based organization based in Bogotá. Its main purpose is to identify and fight against the discrimination, exclusion and rights violations suffered by historically marginalized people and communities. During the past three years, PARCES NGO has worked alongside the LGBTQ community and imprisoned transgender women, homeless people, female and male sex workers, drug users and street vendors. We use a Participatory Action Research (PAR) frame through which a collectivist, community-based perspective seeks to empower the communities we work with and generate both a community impact at the very local scale and public impact at the district and national scale through public policy recommendations. The organization’s main goal is to have political, social and cultural incidence that protects and promotes the human rights of the marginalized populations we work alongside including transgender women.

Our approach triangulates the use of rigorously produced academic evidence, the active participation of affected community members and creative strategies for political and public incidence that enable our campaigns and advocacy efforts to reach not only governmental actors that can catalyze top-down changes but also broader society and citizens who reproduce the more subtle and silent stigmas and structural violence against transgender and other historically marginalized populations. This critical triangulation for social justice is achieved through the articulation of a multidisciplinary team that works alongside peer leaders to rigorously document human rights violations and propose feasible solutions.

Moreover, PARCES has a unique approach to community activism because we promote horizontal alliances between community members, other action-oriented organizations (both governmental and non-governmental) and academia.
