Ponciá is a youth-led initiative that develops tools to help foster civic engagement for children and youth in Vale do Jequitinhonha, one of Brazil’s poorest areas.

We have two main projects:

The first one tries to create and disseminate a better framework to organize children and teenager’s rights conferences at the grassroots level – which are supposed to be main channel between government and children and teenagers. We are developing a set of best practices and reaching out to organizations to share, improve, and implement this material.

The second project aims at co-creating a curriculum with youth that aims at raising their awareness abut their rights and ways of proceeding to access these rights. Our goal is to form facilitators in different communities in partnerships with NGOs who can deliver the curriculum & support youth action.

PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ORGANIZATION

Ana Carolina Paixao de Queiroz

I am a young Afro-Brazilian woman who is working on children, teenagers and youth's rights. Currently, I am taking a gap year from Stanford University (where I am majoring Economics) to work in Vale do Jequitinhonha, one of Brazil's poorest areas. I am the founder of Ponciá, an initiative that develops tools to improve civic engagement among children and youth in Vale do Jequitinhonha - and I joined Namati because I want to access some of its resources and better understand how other programs that focus on legal empowerment in Brazil and Latin America work.
