Establishment
Public Interest Law Advocacy and Litigation Nepal is a non–profit-sharing organization
registered at the District Administration Office of Kathmandu established by young, energetic,
and experienced professional lawyers and human rights activists in Nepal. Most of the members
of Litigation Nepal have completed their Public Interest Law Course from Columbia University,
USA. They have acquired LL.M, Political Science and Sociology degrees from various
universities in Nepal and abroad. Similarly, in addition to the educational degrees and
fellowships, members of Litigation Nepal have attained various trainings in the areas of Human
Rights, Public Interests, Victimology, Environment, Women’s Rights, Indigenous Rights and etc.
The members of Public Interest Law Advocacy and Litigation Nepal have demonstrated
extensive experience in the field of human rights, peace process and transitional justice in Nepal.
Moreover, the members have been frequently involved in human rights monitoring, filing public
interest litigations, and election campaigning during the conflict, and the People’s Movement of
2006 and the current peace process. After the peace accord was signed in 2006, the members have
involved in filing and pleading various public interest litigations (Such as against proceeding of
recruitment of Nepal Army and People’s Liberation Army, President Move against the Interim
Constitution, decision of the government to promote one of the General who has been charged of
human rights violation, LGBTI people’s case, against water privatization, water rights, right to
reproductive health for the prisoners, against monopoly of private schools in determining
curriculum and fees etc). In most of the cases, the Supreme Court of Nepal has delivered
favorable judgments.
Mission and Vision
Public Interest Law Advocacy and Litigation Nepal upholds the principles of human rights
adopted by the United Nations. It embraces universality, indivisibility and interdependence of
human rights and strives for effective realization of international instruments at domestic level.
The primary focus of the organization is to monitor the ongoing peace process, carry out human
rights advocacy and transitional justice and advocate on behalf of vulnerable population such as
women, children, indigenous people, Dalit and other marginalized section of the society. While
Nepal has experienced with problems related with Economic Social and Cultural Rights over the
history, Litigation Nepal will pay adequate attention to enhance such rights through public
interest advocacy.
