Saku Accountability Forum (SAF)

Presence in: Kenya

SAF is a grassroots human rights organisation based in Marsabit County, Northern Kenya, a region that has for long notoriously garnered headline attention for being a hub of human rights atrocities. The Forum was established in January 2009 against the backdrop of the long-standing impunity and unaccountability in leadership and management of public affairs in the County. Its sphere of action revolves around a wide spectrum of public interest issues, including those relating to human rights, democracy, governance, peace and security, and the environment. The Forum believes that these are the issues that lie at the very core of human development, which must be addressed if sustainable development is to be realised by the local indigenous populations.

I am a human rights lawyer working with a community-based human rights and governance organisation in Northern Kenya. The organisation primarily promotes human rights and access to jistice for the marginalised and vulnerable communities in the region that has perennially garnered headline attention for the wrong reasons, including gross and systematic violations of human rights and fundamental frèedoms, glaring avoidable deprivations and inequalities and enduring episodes of violent ethnicised conflicts. Our core change strategy is integrated legal empowerment, within the framework of HRBA.
