Support Organization of Parents with Disabilities [SOPADI]

We started in 2020 with 20 disabled mothers and now we are 249 members. We operate in Busoga Sub region, Uganda. Our vision is to support Disabled parents as the primary spokespersons.

Presence in: Uganda
Focus: Disability Rights, Family, Gender-based violence, Livelihoods, Women's Rights

Belief SOPADI’s background is that it is a community based organization started in January 2020, by 20 young women with disabilities who are parents. We believe that every girl and woman with disability has a right to parenthood which is being denied to many of our members. We advocate ending sexual and gender violence, economic empowerment, family legal rights, access to inclusive sexual and reproductive health rights for all disabled mothers in Jinja, Uganda. We managed to successfully complete official registration as a Community Based Organization (CBO) with the Local Government of Jinja District in December 2020. Reg. No. JJA/12/2020/00464 and the Work Permit No. 476 Vision: “To support Disabled parents as the primary spokespersons for themselves in protecting and ensuring the Rights of all Parents with Disabilities and their Children”. Mission statement: SOPADI exists to brighten the lives of all Parents with disabilities, their children and families. We strongly believe that;
a) We are parents;
b) We live beyond disability;
c) We take action

I am Esther Namulinda, a mother with disability. Together with 20 disabled mothers we formed SOPADI and currently we are 249 disabled mothers in Busoga sub region, Uganda. We are interested in sharing the challenges faced by disabled mothers in terms of SGBV, parenthood, economic empowerment, women's rights and our children's rights. We also want to learn from other human rights advocates on how to fight for our rights.
Namulinda Esther is the network champion (main point of contact) for Support Organization of Parents with Disabilities [SOPADI].
