Governance:
SUPRO was founded as a forum of grassroots-level NGOs on the eve of 8th parliamentary elections in 2001 as a direct result of a collaborative analysis and efforts of local NGOs to campaign for politics free from confrontations and for democratization aimed at bringing about pro-poor policy changes at the central level. In 2004, the National Council (NC) of SUPRO was re-organized, on the eve of formal registration, as a Trust aiming to secure a legal and independent entity. The NC included two women activists to broaden its gender parity and ensure a more balanced representation of women.  In 2007, during further structural reforms, SUPRO included four other female activists into NC emphasizing the women’s rights. In order to provide guidance and policy direction to the Secretariat, the NC elected an Executive Board (EB) comprised of nine members. On September 26 2007, the network received registration from the NGO Affairs Bureau of GoB to get access to funds from abroad — a process which made it possible to work as an independent entity. The SUPRO Secretariat is led by a Director to implement the project activities.

Networking:
At present, SUPRO works closely with 600 local NGOs and CSOs in 45 districts to the above mentioned objectives. As a national network of grassroots-level NGOs in Bangladesh, it has formulated a strategic plan to enable pro-poor policy change focusing on areas where grassroots NGOs can effectively act on to uphold the rights of the marginalized people on the basis of the approach of Rights to Development. SUPRO supports grassroots NGOs and local level civil society groups to build their capacity.
