The Spark Initiative- Ignite, Improvise, Implement

Presence in: India
Focus: Governance, Accountability & Transparency, Traditional / Customary Justice

We, at The Spark Initiative, grew up reading of and constantly hearing of issues that plagued our country but it was when we became law students that we realised we had the resources to solve these issues- all we needed was to tap them, together. Taking root from this idea, The Spark Initiative was founded by two law students after a successful PIL they had filed and was formally inaugurated in January, 2018. As the tagline suggests, we now work to strengthen governance and democratic institutions in India.

Currently, we work through three bodies-

  1. Samvidhan: This body creates draft laws and policies that India lacks. The same is forwarded to the necessary legal institutions to be adopted into the laws of the country.
  2. Siddhant: This body identifies problems arising from the government’s inaction. With through research, Siddhant submits representations of a problem to the District collector. If inaction persists, the representation ultimately goes on to become a public interest litigation.
  3. Sankalp: This body keeps the UN Sustainable Development Goals as it’s aims and works to implement the same from a grassroots level.

The three wings of The Spark Initiative follows a separation of powers between the legislatures, the executive and the judiciary, much like India’s legal system- the above bodies are independent, but interdependent.

The society is currently working on the following-

  • Drafting a bill for public records to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Sanitation issues of Daulatabad in Vikarabad district, Telangana.
  • Gender equality amongst school students
