Kenyan legal empowerment advocates urge government to adopt Access to Justice target for MDGs

Network organization Kituo Cha Sheria has urged Kenyan Parliament to endorse “access to justice” as a target in the post-2015 Millenium Development Goals, and to approve the Legal Aid Bill currently under consideration. Priscilla Nyokabi, Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and former executive director of Kituo has encouraged the organization to start a petition and gather as many signatures as possible to present to the National Assembly. Current Kituo Executive Director Gertrude Angote explains, “The debate to have legal empowerment and access for justice for all is not a Kenyan debate, it should be a global debate. The need for legal empowerment should be recognised in the next phase of the MDGs and added as a matter of global urgency.”
