Roundtable Discussion: Community Land Rights

On April 24th, 2012, Namati hosted a roundtable discussion convening representatives from a number of leading land rights organizations, including The Rights and Resources Initiative, Landesa, Global Witness, and Global Rights, among others. After introducing Namati’s community land protection program, Program Director Rachael Knight and Namati CEO Vivek Maru guided a discussion on critical challenges surrounding the protection of community land rights.

Roundtable participants explored opportunities for institutional collaboration and global action, as well as strategies for engaging investors and multi-national corporations. Participants also identified long-term impacts of community land titling to be investigated by a multi-year longitudinal study on community land titling, presently under development by Namati and its local partners.

After the presentations and brainstorming, participants enjoyed an informal cocktail reception. Commenting on the roundtable, Knight was “delighted by the level of energy and commitment in the room, and [is] looking forward to working in collaboration with other organizations to further the movement for community land rights around the world.”
