Cooperazione Internazionale COOPI in collaboration with the Forum for Women Education and OXFAM Sierra Leone last week concluded a three-day national conference on women’s rights to land and access to justice.

The event held at the Young Women Christians Association YWCA Hall in Freetown brought together over 100 women across the country.

Chairperson of the opening ceremony, Kenyeh Barlay, said the aim of the conference was to educate women about their rights to own land and justice at all levels.

She revealed that a national campaign will soon be launched countrywide which will promote a debate and discourse on the issues.

“The campaign will also provide a much needed space for women who have been denied their rights to a home or livelihood to be heard. It will address the need to discuss and develop national approach to women’s rights to property and land access to justice,” she said.

Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment, Alieu Pat-Sowe, stated that President Koroma’s ‘Agenda for Change’ cares about women than other previous governments.

Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission, Jamestina King maintained that Sierra Leone is one of the countries whose laws are not put into practice.

Roisin Cavangh from COOPI said women have rights like their men folks and a number of laws have been put in place to address women’s right to land and property. “The reality is that few women own lands or property in the country,” she said.
