Este instrumento legal no sólo es el primer tratado medioambiental de la región, sino que además contiene disposiciones específicas para la promoción y protección de las personas defensoras del medio ambiente en América Latina y el Caribe.
En este contexto, es vital que las personas -y especialmente las comunidades más vulnerabilizadas- se apropien de sus derechos y de los instrumentos legales vigentes, que los conozcan, los usen y participen en su (trans)formación; esto es lo que se conoce como un proceso de empoderamiento jurídico.
La siguiente Guía de capacitación para defensores y defensoras ambientales sobre el Acuerdo de Escazú es un recurso para quienes deseen implementar instancias de formación participativas y dinámicas en torno al Acuerdo de Escazú junto a comunidades y personas que defienden el medio ambiente, con el objetivo de que éste llegue al mayor número de personas y comunidades de la región.

After decades of efforts led by civil society, certain regional governments and other key actors such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), on April 22 201 the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, known as Escazú Agreement, entered into force. This instrument is not only the first environmental treaty in the region, but it also contains specific provisions for the promotion and protection of those who defend the environment in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In this context, it is vital for people -and specially the most vulnerable communities- to take ownership of their rights and the available legal instruments, that they know them, use them, and shape them; in what is known as a legal empowerment process.
