Creating a public tool to assess and promote transparency in global land deals: the experience of the Land Matrix

The Land Matrix is an ever-evolving open database of information on intended, planned, and concluded large-scale land acquisitions (LSLA) from across the world. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges and obstacles involved in effectively implementing the Land Matrix, including methodological issues related to the reliability of often biased sources and the secrecy associated with LSLA deals. The article also describes the ultimate objectives of the Land Matrix. The authors discuss plans to expand and refine the Land Matrix in cooperation with partner organizations, investors, governments, and other stakeholders in order to increase accountability and transparency.
