Prosecution of Sexual Violence – Best Practices Manual for the Investigation and Prosecution of Sexual Violence Crimes in Post-Conflict Regions: Lessons Learned from the Office of the Prosecutor for the International Crime Tribunal for Rwanda

By: International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)

This best practices manual, produced by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, draws on experience from 20 years of prosecuting rape and sexual violence crimes that occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The valuable lessons learned from the successes, and failures, are compiled here in the hopes of teaching future prosecutors and members of the criminal justice system how to successfully investigate, prosecute, and raise awareness about rape and other forms of sexual violence crimes at both the international and national levels. The manual includes sections on investigation, pre-trial, trial, the post-trial and appeal phases of prosecution.
