Pasar Gotong Royong – Struggle in Limbangan (Garut, West Java)

Without proper consultation, a company plan to revitalize the Limbangan market in Garut, West Java, forcing hundreds of market dwellers to relocate. The market developers then putting such a high price for each of the stall in the revitalized market, making the merchants unable to be back in the market. Being treated unfairly, the Limbangan market dwellers fought back elegantly by going through legal mechanism with the help of a merchant-turn-paralegal. The merchant and the community then built another market using their own money and named it ‘Gotong Royong’ market. The market community shows that not all threats should be responded with violent.
