World leaders have committed to the sustainable development goals – including the delivery of justice for all. But when governments tackle injustice, they often focus on top-down approaches that ignore those doing groundbreaking legal empowerment work. In doing so, they risk missing out on effective and sustainable solutions. Let’s make sure this doesn’t happen.
The Justice 2015 Campaign demonstrated that our movement can have a tremendous impact when we join together and advocate for a common goal. Thanks to the efforts of more than 300 Global Legal Empowerment Network members, justice-related principles have been successfully incorporated into the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Moving forward, we want to continue partnering with members who are using the sustainable development goals (SDGs) to advance legal empowerment and justice for all at the national level.
The Global Legal Empowerment Network is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for new organization partnerships.
We are accepting applications from organizations working in the following countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
These partnerships will build on the successful SDG Justice Meetings hosted by network members Kituo Cha Sheria (Kenya), WANA Institute (Jordan) and the Alternative Law Group (Philippines) last year. These advocacy meetings brought together reformers in government and civil society to create national action plans for justice reforms linked to the implementation of Goal 16. In the Philippines, a justice section was added to their Development Plan, in Kenya, the group was able to push through the country’s first Legal Aid law.
These partnerships will be a collaborative effort, with Namati providing intensive technical support, limited financial support ($5,000 – $10,000 USD), and other necessary assistance, as the selected partners work to advance justice through national reforms in their home countries. This could be accomplished by collaborating to use the SDGs to advocate for new legislation or to establish a new National Access to Justice Steering Committee. Ultimately, all project ideas are welcome.
We are looking for organization partners from eligible countries who have a passion for advancing access to justice and SDG 16; who currently have or would like to have programs in place that are focused on improving access to justice or legal empowerment; and who are committed to partnering with other civil society organizations. We hope you will consider partnering with us.
