Faida Amurani Phiri is a 28-year-old motivated and experienced female from Malawi currently working with Umunthu Plus, a Malawian NGO working towards alleviating challenges that youth, girls and young women face when accessing social justice as a Programs Manager. After observing challenges that women and girls go through in a drive to access justice and win a space in local governance in June 2014, I founded Young Women Can Do It Initiative (YWCDI,) a women led initiative in Nkhotakota, whose core mandate is to champion access timely justice by victims and survivors of Gender Based Violence and increasing women inclusion in governance structures. Through our advocacy work, we managed to secure a small grant from Network for Youth Development which aimed at enhancing economic livelihood of GBV survivors including female sex workers and attitude change among men and boys towards practices that fuel violence against women and girls. Furthermore, we have worked with other NGOs as projects partners on projects related to Youth Sexual Reproductive Health, girls’ education, leadership and entrepreneurship. Our contributions in the projects helped the partner organizations to increase their funding base as a result of great impacts and sustainable interventions by the projects to the target populace.I am a 2013 Southern Africa Youth Exchange Program Alumni, a program by Southern Africa Trust; that aimed at equipping youth in SADC region with leadership and advocacy skills while striving to create a conflict free SADC region. In addition, I am also 2018 Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI RLC Africa) alumni and currently, I am a chapter resource mobilization lead for Malawi where I lead in resource mobilization for chapter activities and recruitment of participants in the program. Having experience in youth programming and implementation emanated from volunteer and paid work, I have passionately managed to contribute to success of several projects related to youth, girls and women empowerment in health, education and human rights during my paid work with local NGOs and volunteer work for International NGOs. By joining the network, I am looking forward to advancing my knowledge in defending women's rights when accessing justice after being denied of their rights to own land and other social services. I want to deeply understand tactics and best practices in preventing violence against women and girls by engaging with law and legal experts to further protect rights of the deprived women. Malawi is one of the countries where women are denied access to land when their husbands have died or just for being a female child in a family. despite women being the most productive gender when it comes to agriculture, they are still left with no land which makes it difficult for them to manage huge families which they are left with after demise of their husbands. Therefore, joining the network will help me to explore more ways of how I champion women's rights.
