Esli María Cruz Nelson was born in the municipality of Santa Lucía, department of Francisco Morazán in Honduras. She graduated as an attorney from the National Autonomous University of Honduras, where her interest in gender equality and social justice led her to be the UNAH representative at the 6th Central American meeting on academic exchange in international law, presenting her focus on "Violence as a cause of the migration of Central American women ", experiences of this nature have led her to become involved in work with organizations that seek to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people, especially women and children.
She worked on the project "I am a Woman Free of Violence" with the organization PROHAUGEM (Asociación Promotora Hondureña de Auto Gestión de Mujeres) giving legal training to community leaders and helping women suffering from domestic violence.
Since 2018, she began her work with Global Brigades as a lawyer in legal empowerment brigades, providing counseling, training and case monitoring in vulnerable communities in rural Honduras.
