ALARM believes the crisis facing Africa is not poverty or disease, but a lack of good leaders who put the needs of their communities and churches above their personal and tribal interests. Through servant leadership training, ALARM provides the skills needed in theology, evangelism, church planting, discipleship, Biblical peacebuilding, reconciliation, and conflict resolution to pastoral and lay leaders so that they can lead well. ALARM also works to train Christian government officials, lawyers, judges, police, soldiers, and chaplains in servant leadership, good governance, and peacebuilding to create sustainable change as they work amidst corruption.
Tribal and ethnic violence continues to plague Africa. Many Christians in Africa are more loyal to their tribes than to Christ. ALARM addresses the root causes of tribalism, oppression, injustice, and violence by developing leaders who bring healing to broken relationships. Without reconciled relationships, no community or nation can truly experience stability, peace, and development.
As servant leaders are trained and train others, they begin to see their communities differently, allowing them to focus on local concerns and challenges that have become commonplace — such as tribalism and domestic violence. ALARM walks alongside these leaders by providing skills and resources to empower and support their local initiatives. These initiatives focus on social justice, legal aid for the voiceless, caring for widows and orphans, providing basic health education, teaching life skills to boys and girls recovering from war, and economically empowering women. ALARM is African-led and African staffed. Our superbly qualified African Christian staff do ministry in their own countries, where they are intimately connected to the people, the languages, and the culture. While we invite guest teachers from the West from time to time, our staff have the latitude to make decisions, to do their work, and to dream for their nations.
