The mission of my organization is to ensure professional rights of lawyers with disabilities and to ensure access to justice for the persons with disabilities and other marginalized justice seekers.

The main programs of Disability Inclusive Justice and Legal Aid Association (DIJLA) are:

  1. Capacity building of the lawyers with disabilities and building strong network among them;
  2. Legal empowerment of persons with disabilities including disabled peoples’ organizations and other socially excluded community people through legal awareness, capacity building training on right to information, available remedies against violation of rights so that they can access justice and enforce their rights in due process of law.
  3. Sensitization and capacity building of justice sector actors i.e. legal professionals, police, judicial officers, Court staff etc;
  4. Promoting pro-bono legal aid and services;
  5. Referral to the government and non-government service providers
  6. Undertake research and advocacy for legal reforms based on findings of research on identification of gaps and loopholes in existing laws and policies
  7. Strategic legal actions under different laws including public interest litigations under article 102 of the Constitution.

MOHAMMAD REJAUL KARIM SIDDIQUEE

I, Mohammad Rejaul Karim Siddiquee is an advocate with limited mobility. I obtained LL.B (Hons’) and LL.M degrees from one of renowned public University of Bangladesh successfully. I was enrolled as an advocate with Bangladesh Bar Council in 2007 and obtained permission to practice in the High Court Division of Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 2013. But I could not practise law in the Courts due the barriers including limited accessibility. However, I have been engaged in the following legal aid service providing organizations for twelve years: a) Advocate (Public Interest Lawyer), Supreme Court of Bangladesh (2013 to till date) b) President and Honorary Executive Director, Disability Inclusive Justice and Legal Aid Association, an organization of persons with disabilities which is working for ensuring professional rights of lawyers with disabilities and access to justice of people with disabilities (2016 to till date); c) Consultant (In-Country Coordinator), Expanding Participation of People with Disability Program, BlueLaw International (July 2018 to till date)) d) Research Specialist, Bangladesh Legal Aid & Services Trust-BLAST (2015-2018) e) Project Manager, Maxwell Stamp PLC (2014) f) Research and Documentation Officer, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association-BNWLA (2011-12) g) Coordinator, National Alliance of Disabled Peoples’ Organizations-(NADPO) (2010) h) Staff Lawyer, Ain-o-Salish Kendra (ASK) (2009) Significant expertise and activities that I have done: o Research: Experienced in conducting research on wide variety of legal and socio-legal issues including human rights law, labor laws, environmental law, criminal justice system, cyber laws, and access to justice. Coordinated Pro-bono research advisory group formed by BLAST. Led equality justice fellowship program and supervised research activities of Equality Fellows of BLAST. Coordinated Public Interest Lawyering Training and PIL Moot Court Competitions under University Law Clinics at Chittagong University and Rajshahi University. o Legal Practice: Have been enrolled as an Advocate with Bangladesh Bar Council in 2007 and became member of Dhaka Bar Association and Supreme Court Bar Association in 2008 and 2013 respectively. Experienced in researching and marshaling facts and laws, court procedures, legal counseling and advice on civil and criminal matters and legal training. o Reporting to UN Bodies: Have prepared shadow report under the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Actively participated in the preparation of alternative reports to the CEDAW, CAT and UNOHCHR (UPR). By joining this group I would like to expand my network which may help me to flag the concerns around accessing justice by people with disabilities in Bnagladesh and to work out potential ways forward for betterment of the status of implementation of the CRPD in Bangladesh.
