EqualHealth works with local partners to foster the development of a self-sustaining, equitable health system in Haiti through advancing social medicine and medical education.

Presence in: Haiti
Focus: Education, Health, Housing Rights & Informal Settlements

EqualHealth works with local partners to create strong, sustainable medical and nursing education systems. Our goal is to foster the development of a self-sustaining, equitable and collaborative Haitian healthcare system. We strive to equip Haitian health professionals with the skills to provide quality care to all Haitians.

The Social Medicine Consortium (a platform co-created by EqualHealth) is rooted in the belief that inequity kills, and that together we can achieve health equity by constructing systems that demand justice, recognize our global interconnectedness, and enable the next generation of health professionals. Towards our vision of health equity, we build on our foundational work from Haiti and Uganda by developing and implementing social medicine curricula around the world; developing and supporting models of social medicine in practice; and organizing people and communities around actions to advocate for their core interests.

In doing this work we are committed to engaging in humble relationships that recognize our limitations and privileges, acknowledging pervasive historical injustices and pursuing collective liberation through shared struggle. We seek proximity to suffering and create coalitions that transcend traditional lines of power, and utilize disruptive activism to redistribute power and center marginalized voices.

I am Founding Co-Director of EqualHealth and Assistant Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. DI co-founded EqualHealth (www.equalhealth.org), an organization that aims to inspire and support the development of Haiti's next generation of healthcare leaders through transforming medical and nursing education and creating opportunities for Haitian health professionals to thrive. I work to strengthen medical education globally, expand the teaching of social medicine in the US and abroad, and to support health systems strengthening through EqualHealth. In 2015 I worked with several partners to found the Social Medicine Consortium, a global coalition of over 700 people representing over 50 universities and organizations in twelve countries, which seeks to use activism and disruptive pedagogy rooted in the practice and teaching of social medicine to address the miseducation of health professionals on the root causes of illness.
Michelle Morse is the network champion (main point of contact) for EqualHealth.
