Excluded Worker Project

Partners with taxicab drivers in the design & implementation of multi-faceted cabdriver-led campaigns to improve their working conditions & institutionalize economic opportunity

Presence in: United States
Focus: Economic Empowerment

The Excluded Worker Project is grounded in the belief that all workers have a fundamental human right to labor under equitable working conditions and to receive livable earnings. To this end, the EWP partners with taxicab drivers to provide high quality technical assistance designed to strengthen cabdrivers’ ability to take the lead in redefining the value of their labor and their rights as workers.

A long time community-based civil rights attorney with an emphasis in voting rights, immigrant justice (including economic justice for low-income workers), and addressing gun violence, my choice to become a public interest attorney was influenced by my experiences growing up with immigrant parents who labored as migrant farmworkers. A firm believer in a participatory democracy however, using my lawyering skills to partner with community to strengthen and protect their right to self determination was a natural fit. Over the course of my career I have partnered with a variety of marginalized communities to help them not only achieve but institutionalize their vision for change, without having to resort to litigation. This includes teaching community how to strategically engage decision-makers, how to analyze existing laws and draft new ones, how to create policies and practices that engender equity and economic opportunity, for instance.
