About the Litigant in Person Support Strategy

We are helping people without means through the court or tribunal process in the following ways:

  1. Providing online and self-help resources and ensuring that the right people know where they are and how to access them.
  2. Providing practical and emotional support
  3. Providing access to free or affordable legal advice wherever possible

We ensure that these three services are linked together to ensure vulnerable people receive the best available package of support.

Who are we?

The strategy is a collaborative project involving Law for Life, LawWorks, Personal Support Unit, RCJ Advice, Bar Pro Bono Unit and the Access to Justice Foundation. The strategy is supported by two Programme Directors and overseen by an independent advisory council drawn from across the legal and advice sector. We are always keen to develop closer links with relevant organisations. Please contact us for further information. The Support Strategy involves the pro bono and advice sector as well as others including the Ministry of Justice, HMCTS and the Judiciary.

What next?

We have recently launched a new project – the new Litigant in Person Network. The Network aims to connect a wide range of people with a common goal of improving access to justice. It is an online place for people working in this area to share, discussion and collaborate across sectors on issues relating to actual and potential Litigants in Person. This group of over 200 members includes the advice sector, legal professionals, academics, the judiciary, court and tribunal staff (the Network). To join, please visit www.lipnetwork.org.uk
