  1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Mere-Sauwia is one of the Original customary Land on the island of Nguna at the Northern side of the main island Efate where Port Vila is located.

Mere-Sauwia is also known as “Mere” as appear in MAPS due to changes of name made by early missionaries during the year 1800 to early 1900, but the original name is Mere-Sauwia.

The Mere-Sauwia was establish by our ancestors since ages or decade with its own governing system as a guide and rules to ensure proper management of people, resources including socialization activities.

This millennium, on the 25 of December 2000, the present members’ generation of Mere-Sauwia have decided to revive the name Mere-Sauwia and take the name of their organization forward to be recognize within Provincial Level, National Level, Regional level and including International level or world.

  1. Location of Mere-Sauwia

Nguna island is one of the offshore island of the main land Efate where Port Vila is. The total area of Nguna Island is estimated to be 50km2 with a total of 18 original customary. The total population of people on the island is approximately 3000 people.

Mere-Sauwia is one of the 18 original customary on Nguna and is located on the East-North East side of Nguna Island and the Mere-Sauwia customary land itself has a total area of approximately 136 ha.
