Background

NONDO is a Kenyan Non-Governmental Organisation that advocates for the inclusion and participation of persons with disability from nomadic communities in the society. NONDO is the first disabled persons’ organisation to exclusively target PWDs from nomadic communities.

Our main intervention is advocacy. We believe that when persons with disability in this region, and the world at large, have a voice and space to participate, they live meaningful lives and the society is progressive. Some of the approaches that NONDO utilise include; inclusive sports, media engagement and litigation (legal processes)

Milestones:

• Undertaking advocacy work targeting WestPokot, Isiolo, Tana River, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Kajiado, Lamu, Garissa and Wajir Counties.
• Building a network of grassroots DPO partners including orgnisations of parents of children with disabilities across the counties of its operation.
• Building a strong flagship advocacy and integration brand known as the Desert Wheel Race; patented brand and started in 2012 and currently the biggest disability sporting derby in East Africa.
• Providing scholarships to over 50 students in high school and universities with mentorship and career guidance program while strongly advocating for inclusive education.
• Publishing advocacy framework of engagement known as the ‘Isiolo Declaration’ In 2018 its about Post Global Disability Summit and big Four Agenda.
• The Desert Fashion Gala, building a beauty pageant and fashion show brand that repositions the attitude of the public towards women and girls with disabilities and beauty.
• Initiated the first MCAs Caucus on disability in Kenya known as the Nomadic MCAs Caucus on Disability. This Caucus is aimed at mainstreaming disability in Kenya’s devolved system of governance
• Recognized as a critical disability stakeholder by Frontier Counties Development Council an economic bloc of counties of arid and semi-arid counties of Kenya.
