Lusaka, Zambia
Joined March 2021

People's Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia works in urban grassroots communities to fight poverty and homelessness through community driven initiatives.

Presence in: Zambia
Focus: Housing Rights & Informal Settlements

People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) is a local NGO with 15 years experience working with partner organizations, grassroots -led movements and Informal Settlement Networks (ISNs) in rural and urban poor communities in all the ten provinces of Zambia. PPHPZ supports federated networks of the rural and urban poor to address governance issues at local and national level so as to address inequitable access to land, housing, infrastructure, water and sanitation for the majority poor in the country. Our work seeks to capacitate the marginalized rural and urban slum dwellers to work together in networks/movements to ensure that the poor are able to hold to account their civic leaders both at local and national level. To date, the organization has helped with the formation of the largest movements of poor people that have constituted themselves into the Zambia Homeless and Poor People’s Federation with a total membership of over 49 000 consisting of families from poor rural, urban and peri-urban communities, who have mobilized themselves and joined hands to fight the various facets of poverty through savings schemes, Cooperatives with a membership of over 500 members mobilized around housing rights and an informal network of informal settlement dwellers (ISN) with a membership of over 10 000 people that form the social accountability platform to champion community advocacy and provide checks and balances to established and decentralized local level structures and decision making platforms.

I am a Development practitioner who has worked in the development sector for the past 20 years dealing with property and land rights for slum dwellers in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Through working with a national movement of slumdwellers in the Zambia and Homeless and Poor People 's Federation and their support NGO called People's Process on Housing and Poverty , over 25 000 people in Zambia have been helped to regularise and gain security of the land they had settled on "illegally". Through my passion for Human rights , I was forced to study law and I am currently waiting for my results for the bar exams are set for in February . Corollary to the foregoing , it is my hope that I will use my legal skills to help the poor to fight and defend their land and property rights. I would like to join the network to gain knowledge and exposure on fighting and advocating for people's housing and land rights. I am keen on learning from others how they have been handling and fighting land and property right violations in their respective countries. I bring to the network pragmatic and innovative strategies our alliance has used to prevent and thwart evictions against people residing in unplanned settlements.
