Am a dedicated human rights defender with sufficient experience in community mobilization, community development, advocacy and lobbying. My passion is geared towards advocating for rights for the minority and marginalized members of the community from a strong believe that we all deserve an equal civic space to fully enjoy our freedoms and democratic rights. I belong from an ethnic community (Nubi) which has been marginalized but also a minority group who lives in one of the largest informal settlements of Nairobi - KIBERA slums. It's so difficult for my community members to be accorded equal opportunities or just recognition by the state which is governed on the basis of ethnic dominance. This has led to violations of rights to my community and other smaller communities and marginalized special groups. I am the convener of a grassroots organization by name SPEC
(slum peace and empowerment center) which looks to address and champion for pertinent issues that are priority in the informal settlement, as well we foster empowerments initiatives that will booster better livelihoods for the community members. My other focus is to fight against gender based violence which is very rampant in the informal settlements of Nairobi mainly due to these communities still adhering to retrogressive cultures that victimize and demean women because of their sex. I and other like minded comrades are actively involved in demystification of gender myths/stereotypes so that women can enjoy equity.Am looking forward to joining this network which I believe will increase my capacity as a human rights defender, create and build more partnerships and networks and expose me to more opportunities and resources which are relevant in regards to my work of activism.
Ibrahim Hassan is the network champion (main point of contact) for SPEC- slum peace and empowerment center.
